FMCSA Says You Are Not Limited to Third-Party Vendor License Motor Inc.

Post 17 of 37

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require that fleets check their drivers’ commercial license status at least annually to verify the driver has not been convicted of any serious traffic violation or the license disqualified. In 2003, FMCSA stated in a guidance announcement that it was okay for motor carriers to use a third-party notification provider such as New York City-based License Monitor Inc. to satisfy such regulatory requirement. This language caused quite the confusion throughout the industry, leading some to believe License Motor Inc. was the recommended vendor and others unsure if other third-party vendors or state employer notification systems were acceptable under the regulation. In a March 13, 2015 Federal Register post, FMCSA provided guidance explaining carriers are permitted to hire any vendor of their choice; you are not limited to License Motor Inc.
