Effective December 18, 2014, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rescinded the requirement that commercial drivers file inspection reports when there are no vehicle deficiencies or defects. Thus, drivers are no longer required to file a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) at the end of each tour of duty. However, this does not alter drivers’ obligation to conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and report to the motor carrier any deficiencies or defects.
Keep in mind, if you are a motor carrier operating in Canada, you will still need to comply with Canadian national, provincial and territorial requirements that require the post-trip DVIR. The elimination of this daily paperwork is expected to save the trucking industry approximately $1.7 billion and 46.7 million hours annually, all while not compromising safety.
